The 1st Hour
and we’ll see what other fiery magic may unfold too….
There will the opportunity to ask questions and have conversations/discussions about the ancestral fire!
Please note: This is an introduction so we wont be able to go in-depth within this experience.
The 1st Hour
- An introduction to the SHFF approach to fire by friction : the ancestry of fire ; language of fire ; story and ritual; communal welcoming of fire
- A step by step walkthrough of the bow drill technique using natural cordage
- A walkthrough of tinder bundles and breathing the ember to flame; and building a small fire
- Recommended woods and materials and tools
- Safety briefing - tool use and fire safety (There will be an opportunity to use tools but not compulsory.)
- Making a bow drill set together guided and supervised by Ian. There will be the opportunity to make the set yourself with the provided tools or you can watch Ian make the set for you.
- Ian will guide you to use the bow drill to coax the ember out of the wood – and Ian is fairly confident (fire gods allowing!) that we will be successful! The group size is purposefully kept small so that Ian can closely supervise and guide everyone.
- Please note: SHFF encourages communal welcoming of fire so we will start by using the bow drill together before solo practice (there is no obligation to use the bow drill on your own though !)
- You will have the opportunity to be involved in blowing an ember to flame
- You will be able to take a bow drill set home with you.
and we’ll see what other fiery magic may unfold too….
There will the opportunity to ask questions and have conversations/discussions about the ancestral fire!

Location:
- Flexible - SHFF can run this from your own outdoor space (if suitable) or at the "SHFF Woodland Grotto" near Westbury-On-Trym, Bristol.
Accessibility:
- This experience will take place in one location on relatively flat ground.
- Seating will be on tree stumps or folding chairs but you are welcome to bring your own camp chair.
- The bow drill does require some physical exertion; and may not be suitable if you have physical injuries or physical limitations but the whole ethos around SHFF is that anyone can be involved in welcoming fire in some way ; so the experience can be tailored to your needs as required.
- The use of tools (knife\small saw) is optional and will be supervised.
Risks
- There will be smoke (and a risk of smoke inhalation) and as it outdoors and depending on time of year there may be pollen/allergens so please bear this in mind if you have allergies/conditions.
- It is the participants responsibility to inform SHFF of any health conditions or injuries and to bring any required medication.
- There will be the opportunity to use sharp tools (supervised) and there will be a fire so there is a risk of injury (small cuts/burns.)

- A safety briefing will be given at the start of the event (and a risk assessment will be available to view if required.)
